BOGOF

Image
Buy one get one free A second post in one day, qué pasa? After work today we managed a short walk around the town. We got our tokens and so managed to replenish the water supplies and empty our waste.  We bought a spare token just in case we ever come across another machine like that one. It's odds on that we will have that token now for ever but if we ever do need it I will have a very smug look on my face. I will be smugness personified. I will be smugger than a smug person who has just graduated form the University of Smugness. It has been a bit entertaining today watching other motorhomers looking at the machine in various states of bewilderment. We found a couple of semi-interesting buildings. Firstly the Sereilhac Post Office and Telegraph building. It looks like it is original. You will probably be best to click on the image and zoom in a bit to get a better look. It is quite a nice building. No village or town in France is complete without it's old church. They certai...

The sun is out and so is the soup.

The sun is out and so is the soup. Yesterday was a day of travel heading for our rendezvous (see how I used French there) with Rachel later in the week. We had identified a tranquil little village called Séreilhac (I have absolutely no idea how to say that) with a motorhome rest spot by a small fishing lake and some park land. It is indeed a lovely spot. It is a bit chilly this morning but since the sun is rising it should quickly warm up a bit. We knew that the place has all of the services and that here, there is a small charge (not for parking just for the water and electricity) but what we did not realise is that to access them requires tokens. Tokens that you can buy from the town hall. On a Sunday afternoon? Eh .... no. They have however thought of that and tokens can be bought out of town hall hours in the local tabacco shop .... but only when it is open. But it is open on a Sunday afternoon right? Eh ... no. Ok last desperate try at the local Bar ... also shut. It seems th...

Rain in France

Image
When you buy a motorhome You never for one minute think, when you are looking at a motorhome that some days will rain. And it might continue to rain. And just when you think it is getting a little brighter your hopes are dashed with yet more rain. I am pleased to say however that the rain has now eased off to a steady downpour! Actually there is more than a little hyperbole in the above but it has rained quite a lot today. We are still in France, well no surprise there, in a small town called Gujan-Mestras. We decided to walk to the next town today to get some shopping in between the showers. Sheila is now sleeping on the couch and I am relaxing in my chair. I am a bit more confident that we have enough data to share a few pictures so I am going to catch up a few of our travel pics on the route from Soria. We left Soria and travelled to Logroño where we got a refil for our gas bottle and a couple of other campervan essentials at a campervan shop. We then drove on to Pamplona. On r...

Have they got lost?

Image
Lost in translation Hi all of you lovely people who have been following along with our adventure. We have been quiet for a couple of days but have nevertheless moved on and we are now in France. We have had a couple of minor issues including my reversing into a small brick wall. never a good idea but at least thats the first one done. Minor damage repaired with some Duct tape in the meantime. No damage to the brick wall, unsurprisingly. We have spent much of the day trying to get internet access organised for here in France. The promised roaming on our Spanish SIMs is very limited and we have bought a French SIM. data is limited and I have to save enough for my job so the blog may be lacking in images until I can assess how well the data is lasting. I feel sure that you would all want to see my duct tape skills around the rear light but to spare my blushes a little I am restricting images to one new door from Pamplona. You might be lucky and get some other images later. Splendid d...

Soria - highest provincial capital in Spain

Image
A beautiful day of sunshine it has been our pleasure to enjoy today although it has been far from warm. We are in the highest provincial capital in Spain at an altitude of about 1000m. That's about 3/4 the way up Britains highest mountain Ben Nevis. There's a nip in the air and the Kayak was a tad chilly at first light this morning. Our first gas bottle expired last night and we had a bit of a paddy trying to switch over to the new one. After several minutes and a few choice phrases in my best Spanglish I got the new cylinder connected. It prompted me to ask the question about how easily we will be able to change cylinders after we leave Spain. The answer, I am sorry to relate, is not a straightforward one. It would be easy to assume that the fittings will be standard across Europe but as we all know to ass u me is to make an ass out of u and me. They are not the same. Watch this space for a resolution to that particular predicament. We took a trip into town today to visit the...

Cuenca to Guadalajara to Soria

Image
Hello gang, I bet that you were worried yesterday when there was no post. Yesterday was really a bit of a nothing day. We drove from Cuenca to Guadalajara just a little north-east from Madrid. We had intended staying a couple of days there but decided for a number of reasons that I do not need to elaborate upon, to move on again today and we have just arrived in Soria. Let's provide the Google info again Soria is a city in north-central Spain. It's known for its medieval streets and Romanesque architecture. The 12th-century Church of Santo Domingo has an intricately carved portico. The Museo Numantino’s archaeological collection includes artifacts from ancient cemeteries, painted ceramics and the bones of an extinct species of elephant. The sprawling Alameda de Cervantes park has an old hermitage and a bandstand.  ― Google Our "campsite" is right alongside the river Duoro. I have not mentioned it yet but to date we have spent zero nights on a campstie and zero Euro on...

Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses)

Image
Today after work we walked back into Cuenca with a Baldrick like cunning plan to take the hop on hop off tren around the town. It was seven Euro each so we had to bite the bullet a bit on the old cost front but it would almost certainly be worth it. There are about 8 stops on the route so we were excited to take in the vistas and panoramas that lay ahead. As is always the case with a Baldrick cunning plan there is going to be a flaw. It is Sunday, I hear you all shout in unison, the tren doesn't run on Sundays but no, it was much more bizarre than that. We decided to join the train, which does run on a Sunday, at stop number 4 with the intention of doing the full circle. We checked the sign to get the time and with German like efficiency and less than one minute late the Tren pulled into the stop. Only it didn't stop. It doesn't stop. They are not stops apparently. So it's not really a hop on hop off tren. It's not a hop on hop off anything. Still, all's well th...

FOUR go on an adventure

Image
La Road to Cuenca Well did you guess our next destination correctly? We are now in Cuenca which has some spectacular buildings.  However, you'll have to wait to see them.  My dear friend Mr Google says   " Cuenca is a city set in the mountains of east-central Spain. Founded by Moors, it retains its Historic Walled Town with steep cobbled streets and medieval castle ruins. Perched on a limestone spur high above the Júcar and Huécar rivers, it's most famous for its well-preserved "casas colgadas," or hanging houses. Cantilevered over the Huécar gorge, they seemingly cling to the cliffs’ edges". After we arrived we did a reccy into the town and we think we know what to do tomorrow to get the good views. By the way you may have noticed that this post is called FOUR go on an adventure. It seems that Mountie Jack was somewhat dismayed and not at all happy about being left out and demanded to get a better view of the road ahead. He even insisted that I change the ...
