Rendsburg by the canal

 Germany is definitely one of my favourite European countries and I would love to spend much more time here. On this trip however it might be very limited. After only one night in Bremen we were forced to move again because the campsites in the area were all fully booked for the holiday weekend. We also moved a little further than planned and ended up in Rendsburg. Rendsburg is a town on the banks of the Kiel Canal which traverses this narrow section of North Germany from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. The canal is pretty wide and must also be pretty deep because these are ocean going ships that pass through the canal.


It was a busy three days of work for me and sadly the rain fell for significant proportions of the time. We managed a walk into Rendsburg on one of the days but the rest was spent watching the big boats passing by. I was able to follow them online and find out where they were coming from and going to and predict the arrival of the next boat. The guy in the camper next to us spent the three days fishing although, those of you who remember our lack of fish sightings in the "fisheries" of England, we were to suffer the same fate here. We never saw him catch one fish in three days despite him fishing with four rods simultaneously.

And just to show that now all of the boats passing through the canal were big boats here is one of the smaller variety.

Today we were on the move again and moved northwards to what is pretty much the last big town in Germany before we cross into Denmark. This town is called Flensburg but more of that in the next episode.

45 and 45 makes 90

With 90 nights of this trip now completed we have spent 45 of them in the motorhome and 45 with relatives and friends. The last few have been both eventful and uneventful. Firstly on the day before leaving dear old Blighty we were travelling toward Harwich to catch the ferry. As is my want/need we had plenty of time!! I often suffer much abuse from the family about my need to allow for all possibilities when planning a journey. Anyway neither of us had been feeling 100% well in the morning and by afternoon I suddenly felt a good deal worse. We were actually already on route to, and close to, our intended temporary parking spot so we parked up and I thought I might lie down for a spell. Bam! I suddenly felt nauseous and dizzy. I will spare you the details of the ensuing few minutes and cut to the recovery where I spent a goodly part of the afternoon dozing on and off. A short stay in Finland

And so our time in Sweden came to an end. We parked up for the night in the carpark at the ferry terminal ready for the eight and a half hour crossing from Kapellskär to Naantali. Summary of Sweden? Trees, lots and lots of trees. It is normally our policy to avoid the motorways because from the motorways of the world you usually see nothing. We prefer to use the smaller roads and see the towns and villages. In Sweden it makes no difference. In both situations, between places there are trees and the places are far apart and small so motorways ended up being the prefered option in Sweden. Nice place though and glad we visited. Next adventure - Finland. The carpark slowly filled a bit with some pretty big neighbours. My advice to you is if one of these chaps wants to go before you, let him, he'll likely win the fight. Kuldiga

I have been really bad with my updates with nothing for a couple of weeks so I am now playing catch up.  After we left Riga we took a slight detour because we had read that Kuldiga was a nice place to visit. It has the widest waterfall in Europe and so we though why not. We could not see any formal camp sites close by so elected for a free overnight stop in an empty carpark just behind the small pond.  After a peaceful night we were off to explore the town on what can only be described as a beautiful morning. So my first picture for you is a waterfall and I can almost hear you thinking that it does not look very wide. And you would be correct for this is NOT the widest waterfall it is simply a waterfall that we passed on the way to the widest waterfall. And so our walk brought us very quickly to what IS the widest waterfall in Europe and the first thing that must be said is that it is certainly not also the highest.
