"Home" away from Home

Very quick update to say that we have arrived back "home" in Glenrothes where we will remain for a few weeks before continuing the next leg of the trip.  Watch this space for further exciting episodes.

Two days, two capital cities, two contries

And so we came to the end of our Scandinavian adventure with the last of the four capital cities. We had arrived in Helsinki, Finland. Like we have with most of the big cities, we parked up outside of the city and travelled to the centre by local transport. We had chosen a harbourside spot on a little island right by the capital. It was really perfect and after a days work we were ready to walk to the local metro station which was fifteen minutes away. The weather in Finland has been like Scotland, unpredictable and mostly wet. The forecast was bad but we had a ferry booked the next day and had no choice but to make our plans and go regardless of the weather. In actual fact, on the day of the trip the weather was great. On our arrival in Helsinki centre we walked up the metro steps and emerged into the sunshine. They certainly knew how to build railway stations back in the day. Kaunas, Lithuania

The capital city of Lithuania is Vilnius but since it is a bit of a detour we decided to make the next biggest city Kaunas the main focus of our trip through Lithuania. As you drive through the country side of the Baltic states it has to be said that you could be just about anywhere. The landscape is just like driving through lowland Scotland, a few farms, some trees, some agricultural planting and as always the leaping deer signs. We arrived in Kaunas in the mid morning and once again the sun was shining for our trip. I was struggling to reverse into a narrow space in the carpark when a guy waved to us that he was leaving and that we might be better in his space. Initially I thought that there was no point but when we saw his space we realised that he was in one of only two or three big spaces designed for motorhomes. What's the Jaca?

Today we have moved a shortish distance north to Jaca. When I was a child there was a childrens program called Jackanory and it became (at least in my world) a rhyming slang, what's the jackanory? What's the story. Of course I shortened it to what's the jaca? So here is the Jaca. Jaca allows us to tick off another province and complete an autonomous region. We have now done all three provinces of Aragón because Jaca is in Huesca. The weather on the journey has been pretty bad with a lot of rain and it is pretty cold. A bit like Scotland on a good day! We managed a quick walk into the town centre and were astonished by the number of people going about the town. It was pretty busy and we did not really undertsand why. You are probably aware of the Camino de Santiago which is a famous walk along the north coast of Spain ending at Santiago de Compostela.
